Radon
Radon is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless radioactive gas that occurs naturally as a result of the breakdown of uranium in soil, rock, and water. It's commonly found in varying concentrations in the ground beneath homes and other structures.
Radon can enter buildings through cracks in floors and walls, construction joints, gaps in suspended floors, gaps around service pipes, cavities inside walls, and through the water supply. Once inside, it can accumulate to harmful levels, especially in poorly ventilated or tightly sealed spaces.
Because radon is invisible and odorless, it can only be detected through testing. Testing for radon is relatively simple and can be done with DIY kits or by hiring a professional. If high levels are detected, mitigation measures can be taken to reduce radon levels in the home. This may involve sealing cracks and openings in floors and walls, improving ventilation, or installing specialized radon mitigation systems such as sub-slab depressurization systems.
Given the health risks associated with radon exposure, it's important for homeowners to have their homes tested for radon regularly, especially in areas known to have higher radon concentrations. If radon is found, taking steps to mitigate its presence can help protect the health of occupants.
