Staying Current as a Real Estate Broker

What does it mean to stay current as a Real Estate Broker? As a consumer, you probably don't think about that. You may think we are all alike, but we're not! The real estate market changes like every other market. Take Wall Street and how it's watched every day - it goes up and down. That all happens in real estate, but people don't talk about it because there's no real transparent way to measure it like the Dow Jones average or something similar.

But the real estate market also goes up and down - it's a fiduciary market like the stock market or the bond market. It changes every day and it's also affected by a bunch of different things, but consumers generally don't think about how these things relate to what's going to happen to the value of their house or if they are getting ready to sell their house -- how is it going to affect the market for their house right now? But they are also very generally unaware of all the things that change in real estate moving forward into the future. Technology has been a massive thing that affects the real estate market. Simply put - it helps us do a better job.

Unfortunately, a large portion of the real estate community does not really keep up. They show up occasionally, but they don't keep up with what's going on in our industry. And there are all these tools that help make the experience better and help the seller get a better sale for their home, help you get your home exposed to the right market, etc. And if you don't keep up as a REALTOR®, you're not doing the right and best job for your client.

One of the things that we do here at Small and Associates, and something I am particularly proud to push at my office and within my team, is "keeping up". Recently, I attended the Inman News Conference in New York which I enjoy going to every now and then. If you've never heard of Inman, they are essentially like the Wall Street Journal for real estate and their conferences are a roundup of what's going on the real estate world. By attending these and other conferences, it allows me to stay current and find out what's going on outside of Richmond in various markets and apply what I learn to our market. It also helps me see how I can use the most current information to help things be better for my clients, for my team's clients, and for my agents at Small and Associates so that we can all deliver the results that you need us to.
